The city of Aiken,South Carolina has relaxed the standards on the age of homes that can be brought into the city. The ordinance has been amended from "no home over 20 years of age" to "no home built before 1976".

The Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina had a part in the change. General Counsel Allen Hutto said "twenty years is not that old. Now is not the time to make housing difficult with the economy being the worst that it has been since the Great Depression" to the Aiken city council at a meeting on the subject. Hutto also expressed concern that the 20-year age limit was "capricious" and possibly illegal.

In the end,the city council agreed that the appropriate limit was the year of enactment of the HUD code construction of mobile homes,which is 1976.
