Prominent retailers in the area include a Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot, Safeway, Walgreens, Bashas, a 5-screen Allen Theatres Stargazer movie theater, and dozens of retail/restairants/services. Retail employment in the area totals more than 500 workers, representing approximately 11 percent of the total population

Location

Safford is a city in southeastern Arizona. The city of Safford is located in Graham County; the county has a total population of approximately 38,000 residents, and the city of Safford has a population of nearly 10,000 individuals. The population in the city of Safford is fairly consistent, expanding by just 3.5 percent since 2010. Immediately to the west of Safford, the town of Thatcher is home to approximately 5,000 residents. The cities are served by Interstate 10, US 70 and US 191. Safford is located on the south bank of the Gila River and is located near the foothills of the Pinaleno Mountains. The mountain range, including the 10,720-foot Mount Graham, have an impact on the local climate, by reducing winter precipitation. The area is largely an agricultural area; water is drawn from the Gila River to create 40,000 acres of irrigated agriculture.
